Caring for leather properly requires knowing what elements can change the intended original form of the product. It also requires buying the accessories that are needed to maintain the leather care. For instance, leather coats and similar leather apparel should be hung from strong padded hangers. Hanging a leather coat or long leather apparel from a wire hanger or hook will cause the leather to lose its shape. Leather should not be stored in a bright storage area, and should never be stored in a plastic or a non-breathable material. Enclosing leather in non-breathable plastic will quickly dry it out. If the temperature is too high or the air is too humid it will also degrade the quality of the leather apparel. Leather also needs to be well-guarded against damage from food, drink, perfumes, hairsprays and oils, as any cleaning is likely to change the original color. Leather handbags, shoes and boots must be
kept firm with supportive materials or stuffed tissue paper inserts.
